Well, is it worth it? For ~$170.
Keeping in mind I could CF it later. My PSU is adequate.

wtf is the point of ditching your 8800GT?
If you can answer that than sure if you don't mind spending the money.
I ask that because is there a game you love playing that right now the 8800 GT is not adequate? .... Very unlikely except for crysis, but I don't think the 4850 is much better
That is true. I play at 1680x1050 resolution. 8800GT seems alright for me, for now.
4 things stick out at me.
- Scalability of CF.
- Future (3-4 months) price of the 4850.
- I'd give my 8800 GT to someone who'd really appreciate it. (My bro) I bought his whole damn PC already anyway, giving him an 8800GT over his 7950GT would top it off nicely.
- Spider Platform?
Going from a 8800 GT to a HD 4850 is not worth it, but to a HD 4870 it probably would be. First of all, a Corsair 550w PSU would probably be more than enough for a HD 4870, and second of all, you could always sell your 8800 on eBay and make like $120-$140 back.chandlerr_360
I never said I couldn't power a 4870. I said I couldn't power TWO.
My reasoning was buying a 4850 now for ~$170 and another down the road for ~$120 would be better than buying a single 4870 now. It would end up costing the same, and I'd have the extra performance when I actually need it with the second card. I also wouldn't need to buy a new PSU like I would for CF'ing 4870s, which is a large investment in itself.
That 8800 GT isn't even slow yet.
Just wait until you run into some performance problems (or more cash), then upgrade to the latest then.
Of course, if you're a nut like me (I'm going from HD3870 CF to HD4870 CF), then I suppose you'll want to upgrade. It's up to you to decide, whether or not it's worth your money.
